FAQs ~ Wood Shavings
Below are frequently asked questions about High Country wood shavings.
How many bags of wood shavings should I order per stall? Each bag of shavings expands to 10 cubic feet. One bag will give 1 inch of depth in a 12x12 foot stall. Three bags will give 3 inches of depth. 3 inches of bedding should be changed every 5th day of use.
How are the wood shavings produced? We create the bags of high-quality wood shavings from lodgepole pines that have been cut down on our ranch in the Colorado mountains. We never use live trees, and we never add sawdust or other remnants to the shavings. Our products are produced from a mill, that specificallly, only produces shavings, and when they are made they resemble that of pencil shavings, curly, fluffy, and light.
What are the primary uses for wood shavings? Wood shavings can be used in a variety of ways, for all types of animals. Primarily, they’re spread for bedding and for horses and show animals.
What is pine beetle kill? Pine beetle kill is the term used to refer to the millions of acres of forest in Colorado and throughout the Western U.S. that have been ravaged by the pine beetle. After a severe drought in 2002, the mountain pine beetle began to attach lodgepole pines, killing hundreds of millions of healthy pine trees. The massive destruction is actually a natural part of the cycle of life, growth, and death in the forest, but the dead trees don’t look good, and they pose a fire risk. On our family ranch in Parshall, Colorado, we’ve been logging the trees and turning them into high-quality wood shavings…part of our commitment to responsible land stewardship and “recycling.” The removal of these dead trees will serve as a solution to problems such as safety hazards, fire risks, and most importantly overcrowding forests. Sunlight will then poor in, and more moisture will reach the soil as new seedlings begin to grow for the next generation of trees.
